well, upping the dam a bit seems reasonable for some things...

like a polearm (halberd) or a 2 handed or bastard sword,

but I see no reason why any other smaller weapon should do more damage,

as it likely (in a real situation) couldn't be wielded more

effecitvely with 2 hands (ie dagger, short sword, or most long swords).

If indeed a weapon is to be a non missile weapon and 2 handed it should be

heavy enough to reflect that too....anyways...

and as like as not will be deemed offensive to someone-or-other and taken
off. But I'll give this a shot anyway. :)  (Add. warning: It'll be
LONG. But, that's par for my course.)

  A sinister rumour, widely believed in the Occident, holds that after
death we go to a place called Heaven. From all the descriptions I've read,
it sounds dreadful to me. It seems to have a population made up entirely
of some gang of Christians; the experts on Heaven disagree about which
conglomeration of Christians will qualify, but they always seem to think
that they personally belong to that elite group. An eternity with people
that conceited seems intolerable to me, but fortunately I am not a
Christian so I won't be consigned to such a boring place. :)

An even more nefarious report appears in the United States Marine Corps
hymn:  If the Army and the Navy / ever looked on Heaven's scenes / they
would find the streets were guarded / by United States Marines

A place where every street is guarded by Marines sounds like a particularly
vicious police state, and I definitely don't want to go there, even for a
visit. :P

Fortunately, as noted, I don't qualify for Heaven, with all its harps and
fanatic Christians and martial law by Marines. A worse idea, which has
terrified millions, claims that some of us will go to a place called Hell,
where we will suffer eternal torture. This does not scare me because, when
I try to imagine a Mind behind this universe, I cannot conceive that Mind,
usually called "God," as totally mad.

I mean, guys, compare that "God" with the worst monsters you can think of:
Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, that sort of guy. None of them ever inflicted
more than finite pain on their victims. Even de Sade, in his sado-maso
fantasy novels, never devised an unlimited torture. The idea that the Mind
of Creation (if such exists) wants to torture some of its critters for
endless infinities of infinities seems too absurd to take seriously.

Such a deranged mind could not create a mud hut, much less the exquisitely
mathematical universe around us.

If such a monster-God did exist, the sane attitude would consist of
practicing the Buddhist virtue of compassion. He seems very sick in His
head, so don't give way to hatred: try to understand and forgive Him.
Maybe He will recover His wits some day.

(I wrote "He" instead of the fashionable "He or She" because only male Gods
appear to have invented Hells. I can't think of a single Goddess who ever
created a Hell for people who displeased Her.)

There is a hidden menu option in the main menu that lets you see who is

online without actually entering the mud.  This option used to be '8'.

If you have used this option, please stop using it; if you have told 

anyone about this option, please tell them not to use it.  This option

will sometimes crash the mud.  I am working on fixing it, but until I

am finished, please do not use it.  When it works enough to avoid crashing

the mud, then I will make it an official option and you can use it to

your heart's content.  Until then, please refrain.

well part of the reason you can't use the remort command to be an

odd race/class combo is because of the hassle involved in performing

some of the combo switches...class changes are no problem but

changing the race can be a bit tricky...you'd have to change the

class first, to something compatible normally with the race you 

intend on changing to..then the race needs to be changed, then the

class changed back to whatever...that would make for a bit of

"interesting" and non-essential code, (since an imm can do it

much easier than it would be to code that) --> too many IF THEN

ELSE IF type statements to have to account for for me to bother

with it...anyway, that's why ;)

I can't help to comment on Gariel's message.

We didn't really bend the rules.

We sort of agreed half a year ago, that we would count votes of 'active' 

immortals for immorting people.

I'm in contact over ICQ with most players. They can always reach me

there if there are any problems for about 50 hrs a week,

They also keep me posted of who's actually online (immortals that is)

and most of the latest immorting have been approved by all these active 

immortals (Pygar, Musashi, Krimali, Postage and Comotai).

You should just be glad that there are still people left who care for

Nomud, and want to do something to get it back to life.

Another problem we currently we have is that none of us (except Stratos)

has site access since more than a month.

Stratos is working on that, but it takes a bit longer than expected.

I looked at it, and the mortal board was messed up.  What I found was that

instead of using the control character Ctrl-A, someone put a literal '^' and

an 'A'.  This crashed the mud because it was looking for a Ctrl-A.  In order

to make a Ctrl-A in 'vi', use Ctrl-V Ctrl-A in sequence.  To make a Ctrl-A

in 'joe', type ` (the backwards apostrophe) and then an 'A'.  I don't know

how to make control-characters in pico.  If you need to use pico to fix

a board file, cut and paste with the Ctrl-K and Ctrl-U keys respectively.

Okay, this is getting out of hand. I've been meaning to say something since

Jujubee got immorted, but now I can't wait any longer.  Why has the official

method of electing immortals just been thrown out the window?  I know a lot

of people aren't on any more but that is not any excuse to just haphazardly

promote people without any word to the rest of us.  Am I to believe that I

go around and promote whoever I want to to level 105 on a whim?  Sure, I can

hear you saying 'hey, he's going to bring a lot to this mud'  That's all fine

and good, but it is still no excuse to dump the procedures without even as

much as a word to everyone else.

I know a few people who I would have liked to see elected, but they lost. Do

you see me going behind everyone else's back and immorting them anyway?  No.

Why?  Because I know that's not what the rules state.  Now if the rules 

suddenly changed overnight (due to some mud coup or something) there should 

have been some message stating so.

I was just wondering why the established rules for immorting people was

thrown out the window with no warning to anyone else.  As I said, I am not

slamming all the new people (I've seen several werking on zones)  I just

wanted to know why a breach of rules had happened and nothing was said about

it.  When Galad starting bending the rules to make the insane clan eq of

his, he got deleted (and NO, I'm NOT saying anyone should get deleted!)

while the immorting rules (type help new immortals) were totally ignored.



Now if any immortals who are on a lot, but have idle times over 300 would

like to respond, I'll listen.

   No offense man, but i log on quite a bit, not always for long periods of

time but at least several times a day, and i can safely say only one or two of

the imms you mentioned are remotely active.  Now I know i'll catch flak for

this but truly how is one considerd active?  I dont point fingers i wont say

names.  But there are far too many social imms, meaning that they may log on

and socialize but that doesnt truly make them active.  Personally i think there

needs to be a total restructre of the immortal system.  There are far too imms

here, that is something everyone can aggree on.  And instead of doing immortal

things they spend more time worrying about the politics that make the mud go

round.  The new imms although i dont agree with how they came about DO do some

work and for that we are all grateful.  But I say again( damn i'm rambling..  

No coherence....  Sorry) how is someone considered active?  I find it highly

insulting to have policies that we have all held up for as long as i can

remember thrown out the window without so much as a warning note or something

in the IMOTD.

Ok, with all these new imms appearing, the very least we should do is 

introduce them.  So any new imms must sign in on the promotion board or

have their promoter sign in on the promotion board.  This should include

real name, any other chars that might help with recognition, email

address ( a real working one ) and reason for promotion.

Jago wrote the area with the idea that players know how to read descs and pick

up clues.  Every dt in that zone, and I know where everyone of them is (I

prolly know the zone bettere than anyone else on the mud, save for Jago

himself), is either marked, or should be obvious.  I mean, c'mon, a moat lined

w/ stakes?  Naw, that *couldn't* be a dt, now, could it?

say, the messages stop, NOTHING HAPPENS, the mud goes on, lather,

rinse, repeat.

Well I am slowly but surely working on my remort reforms.  I have the 

underlying engine built, but I am trying to write some new spells for

the classes before I make the changeover.  I am also trying to train

a couple of new potential coders, try to transfer to a new college,

work full-time, and get shipped off to Louisiana at a moment's notice.

Unfortunately, at the moment writing spells is low priority.  Did I 

mention that I am also teaching my mom how to play the piano.  After

an hour of that I'm only interested in aspirin.

But fear not, I haven't forgotten.  The changes will be in place eventually,

hopefully before the end of summer.  And yes, there will be some sort of

pwipe, whether it's a partial pwipe, only getting rid of skills, or a full

pwipe, I don't know.  But there will be something.  You can bet on that.

they do is talk.  When some demand is placed on them, the most common

excuse thrown out seems to be is 'I have real life concerns.'  Granted, 

this is just a game, and I can appreciate that, but if you don't have the

time and effort to put into this, then you should step aside for those who

over and over again and enjoy the comfort of having a position of power.



Hanil, all I can say is that rank above level 100 is nothing more then a

popularity contest.  Actual ability hasn't counted for much since about as

far back as I can remember, or I'd still have five stars myself.

Well, it seems to me, that the simplest, easiest, and quickest way to get the most balance back from one action, would be to give attention to the first 

five levels of the zone we all know as Hell.  The experience gained from just a few seconds work here is way out of balance compared to the worst of any other zone.  A quick fix would be to triple the hps of all mobs between the zombies 

at the entrance, all the way to the boatman at the river styx.  this is the most out of balance area.  with this one action, i believe a lot of balance would be back already.

It would force those that only know this one zone to have to branch out to find expenience points.  i'm not saying that this is the only thing that needs to be done, i'm just saying that this is the quickest, easiest patch, that would do a world of good.

n these zones, no matter what level i am.  you see, it's a simple fact that the players will go where the easiest and fastest experience can be found.  the goal is to make the stronger players have to go to the hard zones

.  for instance, would you rather spend 10 seconds on a couple of lustful souls for about 140k exp? or would you rather sweat it out against a comstar for about 2 minutes for 140k?  if the experience gained from things was shifted around a bit, (like mak


ng hard things really give lots of exp and likewise) then we would regain alot of balance already.

this way, the whiny mortals can keep their perms they treasure so much*grin* and the mud would still be hard for them.



Well, it's alot of work to do anything that would help much, and i don't know if we have the  support right now to do anything at all.  the good thing is that ideas are flying now and the wheels are turning, and things only get better after that ;)

Point by point, my comments on the items in the previous list:



WATER DOWN THE MONK CLASS

 But I've been told by a number of people that they feel the mud first

started to slide out of Balance with the introduction of the Monks.



REDUCE MOB XP AMOUNTS

 the mud, going over every creature in every zone. Anything less, and

 builders would complain (perhaps rightly) of being picked on, and any effect

 would be temporary until some intrepid explorer finds another nice Killing

 Field and tells his friends to bring their friends and...



LOSE PERM AFFECTS

 that alone to solve things. Although it would probably go a very long way...



WATER DOWN HELL, AT LEAST UNTIL THINGS ARE BETTER

 Those used to be VERY popular, and people would probably just migrate

 back to them.) Still, I think that, as a band-aid, it could at least slow

 things down a bit. It couldn't hurt, anyway, and once things are good and

 those monsters actually ARE tough again, they could be set back up if the

 zone builder so desired, and if we decide not to go with Option #2 above.



ZAP THE HEALING TIME-SAVERS, INCLUDING SIMEON AND THE PALE BLUE POTIONS

 to his removal. The compromise was to set the price of healing to

 something a little less bargain-basement. IMO, this has worked not that

 badly, since it seems to have forced everyone away from him and onto

 those Blue potions. (I sure don't remember standard practice being to

carry 300 Pale Blues around with you back when Simeone was CHEAP...)

 the guy who's selling them and make him stop. ;) They're nice little

 treasures, and you can't keep them in any case... a consciencious zone

 builder could hide one or two here and there through the zone. It's just

 those huge supplies that mess things up. Cut the supplies off.



ZAP ONLY THE HASTE, BLUR, AND SANC PERMS.

 stuff like that, are really more like conveniences. !Hassle is something

 I personally *LOVE*, but there may be a debate on whether that's too

 much as well. The focus of all this is "Why is it too easy to level?",

 and the only ones that really, I think, contribute to THAT problem are

 the above three.



ZAP THE 4-ATTACKS FOR LEVEL ONE ONWARDS

 almost alone. I remember being stunned at how much more quickly

 everything went with 4 attacks ALONE, let alone all the nifty perms

 that came along after a few remorts more.



GROUPING RESTRICTIONS (CLASSES/ALIGNMENTS/LEVELS/???)

 also be the crowning pain in the butt. ;) It all depends on how well-

 executed it is. Some thoughts on each of the above possibilities:

 mud would have roving bands of players of a variety of classes, each

 strength balancing another weakness. Some role-playing could be

 introduced. Perhaps the monks could be segregated, being solitary and

 taciturn (Word of the Day: Quiet, not saying much) people, and not

 really appreciating the noisy company of lesser men and women.

 (This would also keep the supposedly poverty-vowed Monks from becoming

 enormously wealthy by loophole. ;)

Aren't you glad you've got an aspiring novelist trying to summarize

things?? *grin*



 adamantly refuse to group with Evil, while being Neutral could finally

 be useful. ;) The only problem with this is how easy it is for most

 races to manipulate alignment. Only the Paladin classes and the

 Vampire race include any sort of alignment component, and let's not

 forget the "steal-provoke" method of fighting whatever you want and

 not paying an ideological price. Still, in an ideal mud again, align

 would be a rather central component of who you are and what you do,

 and so the alignment system would need a good review/modification too.

 Grouping Restriction would be a good start.

 one of the hardest to justify. If we didn't have L.99's desperate for

 a big leadership XP-bonus going around recruiting L.3's to follow them

 around (I know of what I speak, it happens a LOT. During my extended

 term as a L.3, I was practically a Holy Grail. I was pestered to be

 leveled almost as much as I'm now pestered to LEVEL... and met with

 various reactions when I tried to say I wasn't interested. It was

 rather sad, really.)

 However, it also kinda doesn't follow that a powerful person is

 prohibited from helping his little friend. One solution would be

 to eliminate the leadership bonus. It would take awhile, but it would

 eventually filter through some of the player's heads that the only

 reason for helping a weak player would be Niceness (or to be more

 realistic, to perhaps forge a future ally or two).

 so that it would be relatively easy to be leveled up to around 20

 or 30, and increasingly difficult to L.50. Much beyond that and

 grouping with someone >5 or 10 levels above you should return

 practically nothing.

 slider by a further 10% per remort. There is absolutely no excuse

 for a level 80 quadruple-remort moping about looking for someone to

 level him! Not ever, but ESPECIALLY not NOW, as things presently

 stand!!



WELL THAT'S ABOUT IT!!!!! Is there anything that needs clarification?

convenient one...protect from good/evil make you take just a few

points less damage than normal..waterwalk is negated by fly (you don't

need a boat or raft anymore..big deal)..waterbreathe only one zone

i know of where it's useful and 95% or more of the people that play here

don't know of it or how to get there...sneak..woo powerful one there i

tell ya (you still get seen half the time unless you're an elf)...flight

is countered by getting mercury's hat which is oh so difficult to acquire

...however the first three mentioned reduce the damage you receive by 1/2

double your # of regular attacks and greatly reduce your ability to be

struck by your opponent...

goober, the monk idea is interesting but this isn't rp and i don't likely

think it will be..if so it'd be a half-assed rp mud or a partial rp mud

which..what good is that if only some people rp...

oh yeah..another affect is to detect aura's..nice only if you have color

otherwise i don't even bother to pay attention so it's not all that 

either...

but i think if people get hurt more easily and have no means of healing

other than resting/sleeping/cleric friend then their days of "power-

leveling" are over and done with...unless a crapload of demi chars

decide to help with spells galore...

i also don't believe monks NEED to be watered down...it takes them

3 or 4 times longer to level than regular characters when they're allowed

to heal..they throw things out of whack when they help low level chars

level fast...change the grouping system to how it once was and that's

taken care of imo

Sun Apr  4 (Postage)    :: The Return of the Coder (otherwise known as Someone Who Can Do Something About It
After an extended leave of absence (I made a last minute spontaneous decision

to give up the Internet for Lent), I am back.  I have been readings these

posts, and here are my comments:

  1) If you think the mud became unbalanced when Monks arrived, you aren't

     a REALLY old player.  If the name "Supermort" rings a bell, I pity you.

  2) I will be overhauling the Remort system (yes, I've been saying this

     for nearly half a year now).  I still don't have nearly enough new

     spells and skills, but I don't think I can wait any longer.

  3) First and foremost, I am removing Demi-God status.  Level 100 may still

     have some sort of bonus, but it won't have anything to do with extra 

     skills/spells.

  4) Each class will keep his perm affs (probably.. maybe a few shifts here

     and there), but these affs will no longer remain through a remort.

  5) Since demi-gods will no longer exist, full skill access will also no

     longer exist.  Upon a remort, the player will keep all known skills at

     the time of remort, with a % decrease in ability.  For example, if a 

     mage remorts, his Magic Missile spell may go from 95% ability to 85%.

     If he does not remort back to a mage (changes race), the ability will

     remain at 85% until he remorts again, when it will drop again.  If he

     remains a mage, he will have the opportunity to re-practice the spell

     when mages normally get the spell.  I expect about a 5 remort limit

     on skill knowledge, so after 5 remorts with no repracticing, a skill

     level will be at 0.  The exact formula will have qualifiers, including

     intelligence, wisdom, etc.

  6) I haven't decided about stat increases, though I might have decided

     in the past and just forgotten.  I'll be on the lookout for suggestions.

  7) I was hoping to receive enough new skills/spells to be able to remove

     all duplicate sk/sp so that all classes have independent skill lists.

     Since I don't have nearly enough, I will have to make up stuff as I go

     along.  Again, if you have well thought-out ideas, send them to:

  8) One thing I can do almost immediately is implement a remort variable in

     the exp gain code.  This will be combined with the mob's level to 

     determine the number used in determining difficulty of the mob.  A 

     R0L100 (Remorts 0, Level 100) player will gain more exp from an 

     R0L100 mob then an R1L100 player will (half, maybe less).  I will also 

     place this check in the consider code, although I don't know if anyone 

     uses it.  Builders, expect an addition to the OLC soon with this change 

     implemented.  All mobs will default to R0, so it's your responsibility 

     to change the value to its proper form.

 9) What is this leadership bonus thing?  I am not familiar with that term.

10) I don't have anything else to say, but 10 is such a nice number, so

So, what. This isn't an RP mud, so there's just no point in trying

None of these situations seem very "monk"-like to me. The "solitary

fighter" idea was just a reasonable justification for the obvious

solution to the above "problems".



So this isn't an RP mud. Why shouldn't we work at keeping things in

some sort of logical order? And hey... maybe adding a few RP-style

features or rules would encourage it to happen a little more.

There's nothing to stop them from following their friends around.

But the class components that are supposed to "balance" the monk

Preventing monks from grouping would go a ways towards making them

a bit fairer.



Oh. For Postage: The "leadership bonus" is what I'm calling the

effect that, if a L.99 groups with a L.4, the L.4 doesn't get as

much XP as he would if he had killed the mob himself, while the L.99

get substantially MORE than if he were fighting solitary.

One thing that we can all agree on is the need for new mortal players.  As some

have mentioned, it seems to be an immfest lately.  Well, who better to do some

recruiting than the players themselves?  But maybe they should get some kind of

motivational bonuses.  I'm willing to give anyone who brings a new player to

the mud a prize.  Nothing's hotter than quest eq in the mort world these days,

so why not give it out as a prize for recruiters?  Maybe a ring of the ancients

when any players gets one new player to come here.  And when\if that new player

reaches level 100, then the recruiter would get their choice of any single

piece of quest eq.  Well, just a thought.  Give me feedback :D And with a

little refining, maybe we could start this policy soon.

I don't feel like it was wrong at all for Hanil to write what he did.

The message he was referring to was written on a public board.  It 

isn't like he was writing something that was said in private or

his response and opinion to a message written there, and there is not

a thing wrong with that, at all. Greybow...I also thought the 

message you wrote was a bit rude if it had been serious, which it 

seemed to be. More of an indication that you were joking would have

helped the whole matter a lot.  It also is, in my opinion, a tad 

hypocritical to attack Hanil's reply message to you.  First of all

you deleted your message (great...) so people could not have any 

idea of the whole story.  Secondly you were criticizing him for 

talking about things like that on public boards, yet you go back and

was done...like you have to get 5 of the random pieces

These are good ideas, but let me toss something else out.  Instead of just

giving out eq for quest, why not award quest points?  Possibly make a shop

in Midgaard that deals in quest points and quest eq.  Like when a PC has

enough points amassed, they can go trade them in for a pemanent piece of

quest(TM) eq?  Or possibly let them have a custom-made piece of eq?  Feedback

appreciated, as always.

More thoughts.  I sorta like Hanil's notion of randomly moving quest-caliber

eq to mobs, but the drawback I can see to that is when a really cool piece 

of eq winds up on a fido in Midgaard.  Sorta defeats the purpose...



re: Maya.  I've seen a quest shop on another mud, Eclipse of Fate.  They

also run CircleMUD, so it is doable with a little bit of work.  Maybe 

it's something a coder-apprentice like yourself can cut your teeth on. :)



Back to Hanil's notion.  Given the insane amount of money floating about,

why not set up a shop where you can rent powerful eq?  Perhaps something

for a limited number of ticks for an incredibly large amount of gold

(for this to work probably somewhere like 10,000,000+), or rent it by the

tick...I dunno...it's late and I'm probably rambling.

way this mud is going to get more players, is if it actually

If you want to get more players, make this a GAME again, make

I've been away a long time now. I left after I had pretty much

lost all hope of anything actually effectively being done.

Things were talked about for months on end, round and round in

circles, but nothing ever actually got DONE.



I've been playing at probably one of the best coded, balanced,

challenging muds i have ever seen.



Recently I've had a few people/players actually contact me, 

begging me to come back, because they said the place basically

sucks. {not my words}.. I am back, and I have a lot of ideas

of how to make this place "playable" again. I am going to do

my best to put those things INTO action. And I invite anyone

that wants to help actually make NoMud into a viable play

environment to join me. I have talked briefly with Pygar and

Taranis about some of my ideas so far, and I think people do

want to see something done.



It's late here and I'm tired. I'm sure i'll be seeing you all

In order to reverse the state of stagflation the mud is currently in, the

following things need to be done.  Let's not argue this time - let's just

make it happen:



1.  A 10% poll tax.  Every time someone logs into the mud, their total

funds are reduced by 10 percent.  This needs to be run for no fewer than 30

days, possibly as long as 60.



2.  A new money limit of mobs shall be imposed, retroactively.  As of now,

the limit is the mob's level x 100 gold pieces.  If your zone is out of

whack, fix it.



3.  The buying and selling variables of shopkeepers needs to be modified.

Minus 50% for buying, plus 50% for selling.  This includes Simeon, people.



4.  There needs to be a value limit of equipment.  I haven't had the time

to come up with a suitable formula; this is probably best reserved until the

eq system is totally revamped.



As I said earlier, the time for bickering is over, let's just get things

done and not worry over who might be offended.  This and other problems

have been allowed to fester too long, and it's time we just started doing

things.

Here's a little update from me and Gariel:



After reading Amber's message, Gariel and I started to browse the quest

item list.  We noticed quite a few items that were WAY overpowered and that

just flat out broke building rules.  Back when I joined the building team I think

2 yrs ago we decided that the MAX hit and dam modifiers could be +5 and +5 at lvl 100.

I can see it being a bit better than normal eq since it is quest eq, but that was 

an absolute rule at one point.  As I understood it, quest eq was to be a bit better

than similar eq at specific levels, but not just all out kick ass and minlevel < 10.

On a similar note, and following what Blackrose posted a few messages up, I agree

that the mud is in serious need of reform.  We need to come up with some strict

eq guidelines and revamp all the eq / mobs / xp on the mud.  Also we need to revamp

the player abilities ESPECIALLY remorts (attacks, perm affects).

Hi Everyone. Since I spouted my mouth off and preached

the mud-revamp gospel, I figured I had better put my

money where my mouth is.



My Zone [RoseMall] is now revamped. Mob's toughened

up and made harder, EXP lessened, and the money on

the mobs brought in line with Taranis's guidelines

(which i think are good).



I've also re-colored it, looks much damned better now.

The Equipment in there has been downgraded drastically

and is much more realistic now.



I'll no doubt do some more bits and peices to it. But

it's now more what things should be looking like.



I hope everyone gets into their zones and fixes them

up. If you don't, someone else just might! :)



BTW: for those zones out there with builders long gone

throw me one. And ill fix another.

Why not just make it impossible to use recall scrolls in combat?  That would

make it a good bit harder and I don't think it would be a bad change.  That way

the cleric's word of recall would become a more powerful spell and maybe would

I agree that rebalancing some zones would be a good idea, but I think a much

more effective solution to making the game more challenging would be to

completely ELIMINATE THE REMORT SYSTEM!  Multiple attacks for all, permanent

hast, permanent sanc, and the like are what made this mud completely pointless.

Why bother grouping with a warrior when your cleric character had 4 attacks

alread and could heal himself.  I think the gameplay of the mud was better

without being able to remort.  I also think reinstating the level grouping

restrictions would be a good idea; maybe allow a range of 20 levels to be

goruped together rather than 100.  Hrm...  Just some ideas.  I'll probably

think of more later.  Why don't we vote on this and get something decided about

it in writing so we can get going??

I have a better idea. Rather than building restrictions

into the code. Build it into PLAY! Okay, think about it

in a fight situation, if you've got five really buff

people and one say real weakingly, in a real situation

why WOULDNT you take them along?



Because things you hit are UNPREDICTABLE, and your 

little dude would more than likely get wiped out.



Make mobs SWITCH! if youre fighting in my mind some

monster dude, the thing will have enough intelligence

and instinct.. as in LIFE.. to go for the weakest, as

it is in nature.



Rather than the mobs just blindly hitting the one

player in a battle, if three people are all hitting

it, make it SWITCH to others that are hitting it.

Sure, thats not going to do much if people just follow

along and do nothing. So make more agg mobs!!!



AND.. also, rather than restricting who players can

group with, i dont like the idea of the code telling

players who they can and cant group with. Rather

than that, increase the percentage difference in exp

you get if youre the lower level person. I think its

already in place yes? well make it more so.. If

people are more than 10levels below the rest, then

theyre going to get REALLLY really minimal exp off

the kills.

Reduce their max attacks to 2?? yeah sure. How

about we reduce them to ONE! Clerics shouldnt be

doing bad warrior impressions and hitting like

trucks numerous times per round.



How about this: Reduce their attacks back to One.

This of course means they wont be able to take on

big mobs by themselves *GASP* they might *GASP*

actually require a warrior type to hit for them!

This of course will reduce the amount of exp they

get, because theyre not hitting. So okay. How

about make it so clerics get a *little* exp for

healing their group members in a battle.



Seems to me thats what clerics are SUPPOSED to

do yeah??

This evening when i logged in, all the EQ had &+m(restrung)

&+wall over it. AND a lot of it was actually messed up.



What the HELL is a restring?? (I actually have an idea what

this is, ive seen it on another mud - NOTE: it was later 

removed and ditched as a bad idea).



I really dont understand. Why is stuff like this being

implemented when there is obviously much more important

work to be done!??!?!

Not sure whose Object this is. Apologise for standing on

whoevers toes. Its sposed to be a shield, not a weapon.

Yes I understand its Quest stuff. But in line with the

reduction of EQ power. 6hitroll 3damroll is a little 

TOO MUCH for an item labeled shield. Not to mention the

item type was "Light" *boggle*. A shield is a peice of

armor! and has been changed accordingly. The AC increased

as more befits a "SHIELD" and hitroll reduced.

Yes I understand that builders want people to wear THEIR eq.

But really, quit the ego tripping. And im not saying I wasnt

guilty of it back when I built my zone too! so Im just as 

much to blame for game imbalance as every other person thats

built a zone. ALSO - we were all building to a slowly but

ever increasing EQ power standard. Unfortunately this has

badly damaged the game balance and needs to be fixed.



For those that are building zones now, take a look at what

the peice of EQ IS and give it stats accordingly. Try NOT

to load up the item with stat increases on every damned 

thing you can think of.. check this out for example :



2str, 2int, 3hit, 5dam, 3age, 10ac..



what on earth is that? :) its like.. 

oh lets just load the item up with everything! who cares!



Build appropriate EQ, not just make it stupidly too kick ass

so that everyone in the game is wearing YOUR peice of EQ.

OK, I'm going to try to be the voice of reason here (your shock here) so

bear with me.



First, in reference to Gariel's support of the recall idea.  It's silly.

Making it so you can't recall in a fight will do nothing more than annoy

players.  Plus, the smart ones will just have someone summon them.



Second, BlackRose vs. Postage.  You're both right and you're both wrong.

I'll do what I can here to maintain neutrality.  Yes, BlackRose has been 

gone for some time.  From what I can gather, it was because she feels/felt

the same way I do/did, that NoMUD is a sinking ship going down by the head.

But the fact remains that she was *asked* to come back by people who want

to try to salvage this place and restore some of its former glory.  It's

good to see that there is someone here who has both the drive to want to

fix things, and the authority to get it done.  And it's not right to blame

her or jump down her throat.



Yes, Postage is a good coder here.  He's been here as far back as I can 

remember and beyond that even.  And yes, Blackrose could have handled

the problem in a better way.  But let's put this in perspective here.  If

your car has a busted transmission and a leaky radiator, is it smart to

spend your time putting in a new stereo?  Probably not - that's something

that can wait.



What we need to do here is prioritize.  Fix the big stuff first, then add

bells and whistles.  I've got the money angle fixed, I'm just waiting for

implementation.  Equipment should come next in my opinion, then mobs to

match.  Then the remort system.  As usual, feedback is welcomed.

Musashi, the creator of the zones on the World of Rune, is away on summer vacation.

He should be gone until around the end of august, and he is unable to directly take comments and suggestion about his zones.

However, I have worked with him closely on the construction and I'm very familiar with his zones.

Also, he has directly given me his permission to change, edit, modify whatever i feel is neccesary.

So, until he returns, please direct all comments and suggested changes to me and i will handle them.

specific reason.  There is simply too much bloody money floating around

right now.  I ordered that change and several others to try to halt and

hopefully reverse the rampant inflation that was been infesting the mud for

several years.  When NoMUD's finances are back to where they ought to be,

then we can discuss changing the rules, but for now, this is really the way

it needs to be.

I think the official punishment for carrying around too much clan eq (and

having 8 pretty much disqualifies the possibility for accident) was to

stone the person and make them lose ALL of their eq.  So, no, I don't think

About the recall thing, yes, I know that they could just flee and recall (

I DID put it in my original post)  I was just saying that word of recall is

overly abused during fights (well, IF someone actually gets in trouble, but

I'll get to that on another post) maybe have it wait for a tick to go off

or something like that would help.

I got quite a few people ASKING me to come back. I'm not even

going to go into that, needless to say, i was asked. I left

NoMud some months back, only after I had given up all hope

of anything ever being done. After I tried and tried, for a

long long time and a lot of other people had already left.

Im talking Years here, I LOVE this place, and I left with a

heavy heart. Yet it seemed that things got talked about and

talked about and talked about some more, but nothing ever

actually got DONE. This place is a mess. I don't think anyone

can actually disagree with that, the balance is awful. Players

and remorts especially are way overpowered, zones are too 

easy and EQ is way over the top. 100/100 hitdam that players

are running round with is just silly, add to the fact that

remorts with a dodge and parry mastered cant even hardly be

HIT by the mobs, youre talking slaughter and no challenge

whatsoever. I came back with the intent on DOING something

about this, I was well aware this was possibly going to put

some peoples noses out of joint, but I'm here, Im WILLING to

= D O = something about this. I talk plain, and Im not going

to beat around the bush and make nice nice. 



Game Balance needs to be FIRST PRIORITY. We can have all the

lovely little bits and pretty peices you like, but the game

balance (player power/mobs/eq) needs to be fixed. Nothing 

else will be right until that is done.



I didnt mean to offend you Postage, it just surprised me to

see that go in. No one online knew anything about it, and

a lot of the EQ on at the time was actually stuffed, weird

ascii chars showing etc



And as for Amber's post, if you are so objectionable to me

actually coming back and DOING. Then by all means, everyone

email me and ill go again.

   Ok first off about the recall not being realistic...  Your in a land of

monsters and magic, its not supposed to be realistic.  Simply upping the prices

should be sufficient, but the only prob is that new players who havent been

hoarding gold for a year might find it hard to play.  Maybe have a field in

shopkeeper code that multiplies prices based on your remorts.  And i would like

to point out (i'm not actively trying to sound like an ass) that this whole

realism thing your preaching me and mattimeo were trying to do LAST YEAR.  And

then you shot it down saying that this mud isnt about realism...  Why the

change of heart?  And then if you want realism, enable pkill again.  If we make

a pkflag that the players CAN'T take off then if they get their corpse eaten is

their own fault for choosing to play pkill.  The fact is that repeatadly

commiting genocide to a bunch of vnums can be boring on occasion, fighting

someone with a mind is much more entertaining.

again frustrated, it is because I perhaps am, and

I realy am not saying anyone in particular, NoMud

has always been a seething pit of politics, gossip

and personalities. It has always been one of the

things that was a hindrance to ever getting any-

thing done as well. 



Rather than continually posting about who feels

what, if you have a personal opinion to make,

take it to them directly or mail them. Lets load

the boards with constructive ideas about how

to improve the mud! :)

was something like having say 15 peices of Quest EQ.

Set total. Going from a very basic item, and one by

one increasing in power 1 to 15. When someone won a 

quest, they got #1 item. When they won a quest the

next time theyd win item number #2 and so on so and

so on.

A few months ago there was a similar craze that had everyone wanted to be this

eternally not yet finished class.  However, at the request of a few of the Imms

(i think postage was one), it was agreed that no more samurai remorts would be

done until it was a finished class.  Personally, i don't have a problem with

people wanted to be samurais, even with them not finished.  Well, what's it

gonna be?  Are they legal or not?  Should remorts to samurai be done?

that weapon reminds me... I would like to create a glass sword.  What it

will do is be a one-shot weapon, shattering upon impact.  But following

the logic of a glass sword, when the sword shatters, the shards of glass

will penetrate into the victim and impale it multiple times, thus doing

mucho damage.  So if anyone who actually HAS a zone is interested in this

weapon, tell me and we can work out a deal where someone makes the 

prototype and i'll make the spec proc.

Ok, I played quite a few times with your clown.  Here's the facts ;) Don't

attack the clown first.  Kill the bumper cars or you will not have very much

fun ;) Second, once you kill the cars, trip that clown or else you won't be

standing around too much after that.  The clown can hit, however, with one hit,

anyone with healing can take it.  I survived with -109 AC 36 HR and 66 DR.  It

killed me a couple times, well, the clown once when I decided not to trip it ;)

The other time, the bumper cars ganged up on me after I attacked the clown.  I

may have died one other time, but I can't remember exactly.  Klepto

Just a short note about our clan equip and its

availability....we do a good job of maintaining

our equipment. I saw SDC ppl complaining about

the emptiness of their clan vault. Also, it is 

well known that certain SDC members break to 

rules of this mud by hoarding and wearing

Since i am a former member of SDC, i have seen what has gone on there.  

Yes, there have been complaits but thats because eveytime 

the mud would reboot Slicer boy would go get all the clan eq abd put it in his Stocking.

He let me count how many he had, 75 peaces i counted. Now thats just plain Stupid. I think he was trying to get thrown out. But then again thats why i quit SDC, because the imms that run it arer never on. So how were they supposed to enforce the clan rul


I wanted to be part of a clan that had great loyal people, and a great clan leader and i have found it.

And a leader thats actually on, so that he can look after the clan.

1. More containers.... The Cloak would make a good container to help carry more stuff and make it more useful as an item....

2. The Help file for ETC lists the some of the items at the wrong levels... mainly the lower level ones.... The Cloak says 30 or 35, but is really 25...

Even though the recall scroll issue is very minor in comparason with the whole

mud balance that is going on, I think it could still be helpful.  First of all,

I think it would be virtually impossible to make recalls expensive enough to

make them rare.  I know many characters who have hundreds of millions and even

more than a billion coins.  For them recalls would have to cost >> 1million to

hurt.  This would make them absolutely useless to newbies.  To make recalls

more balanced, I think a modification to Gariel's idea would work better: it

would be necessary to turn on the lose exp when fleeing option again.  This way

if someone was fighting and decided they had to run, they would first of all

have to successfully flee and when they did, they would lose xp.  That would

make leveling a LITTLE bit harder.  Again, I think that the MOST effective way

to balance the mud would be to edit every players' file and remove all the

remort effects.  Let's get the mud balanced before we worry about the remort

system working / not working.  Why don't we just return it to the way it was

before there were remorts: no perm sanc / haste / insane #'s of attacks.  This

way we could see how powerful people are and then balance the mobs and eq

accordingly.

I have finally put in a mob that carries a piece of eq that

is too powerful to be given away EVER.  It is only to be earned,

and that is done by killing the mob that caries it.

When I had help making this eq I said that I would be responsible

if there were too many of it in circulation, and so I made

it VERY difficuly to get.  Thus I don't want it being given

away, either as a present (ie cheating) or as a prize in a quest.

it is obj 1471 (I think) a VORPAl Bastard sword.

There is also a vorpal short sword, but it will never be zloaded,

and is subject to the same non-quest eq restrictions.

I'm not being bitchy on purpose, I just am not flexible on this issue,

and would hate to have to delete the item.

I'm just going to list off some thing that I think are too powerful and then

a possible suggestion for helping:



Dodge/parry at superb:  with BOTH of these skills at superb (not to mention

blur) mobs have a VERY rough time hitting people.  The only way to help this

right now is to give the mobs an INSANE amount of attacks (if the clown only

had one or two attacks, it would be pretty easy to kill).  Possible fix,

give mobs a saving throw type deal to help counteract dodge and parry, not

make them totally ignore it, just have a better chance.



Permament effects:  these really need to be removed.  Fourth attack isn't 

THAT bad by itself, it's when it is combined with haste that it becomes 

insane.  Now, if these get taken away, EVERYONE will just remort into a 

fairy, so that class would need to be looked into (I would just take away

the permament haste from them)



Just a random suggestion, make it so that the more powerful a race is, the

more exp it needs to get to the next level.  Humans and halflings would 

level the fastest with Ogres and Fairies taking longer.



I do agree with Bash, balance the characters first and then worry about the

eq and mobs.  If we do need to do a pwipe, I would highly suggest promoting

the people that return back to the level that they were at.

Fri Jun  4 (Darkchild)  :: Concerning gold limit from mobs
A few posts back, there was a message about limiting the gold on mobs to 100x

their level(level 100 mob carried 10000 coins max).  The way I see it, using

the level of a mob could get boring and wouldn't be an accurate prize for

different mobs.  For instance, compare a level 100 or 101 mob that is fairly

easy to defeat, to the Environmentalist.  If the standard is level, them both

of these mobs would get the same gold limit even though one of them is

considerably harder to best than the other.  So, instead of using level, maybe

we could use the editor's evaluation of the mob's power which is displayed in

purple in the stat screen.  This way, depending on the difficulty and not level

of the mob, mortals would be rewarded accordingly.  Also, we would start to see

a bunch of mobs that give gold only in perfect little chunks instead of it

being more random and interesting(from 100 coins for a level 1 mob and

increasing in blocks of hundreds to 10000).  Wannabe Ninja, &+WDarkchild

sorry, the orig message was lost in a crash.

The deal with the weapon is that it has a chance of instantaly killing

any creature you attack.  The chance is based on the realtive

levels of the attacker and victim.  The method of death is

decapitation.

that is why I gave it less than stellar stats, I would LOL

if someone actually went to the work of getting it, identified it,

and then choose not to use it before trying it out :)



Oh, the chance is 100 percent for imms, so load one and try it

out if you like, but then please junk it.  I'd rather I was

the only one always runnin round with one of these :P



And please keep its actual ability to yourself (ie among imms),

though anyone that played or at least DM'ed AD&D would likely

know what it is (and I hear the Jabberwockey (sic?) has it too).

the *current* remort system, because 1) we all know it would be damn broken

right now and 2) I have some thoughts on this and a revised remort system.

i was aware of the average dam difference between 12d11 and 20d5

however my point was i didn't see what what made the weapon

so outlandishly powerful..and now fury has answered my question

and personally i think giving the weapon a possibility of taking

out any mob with one hit is too much. i mean i keep hearing the

whining and bitching about morts having it too easy and then a

weapon with this capability comes into creation..it seems like 

you're heading in the wrong direction to me...don't know the roll

% for instant kill on the sword vs that of nstrike but it seems

like this weapon will in effect give each race and class the same 

net effect of nstrike and some people have been saying even nstrike

for monks alone is too strong...just doesn't make sense to me

I have created a new spell for mages.  The Blink spell will cause the 

affected to randomly blink out of existence for one CR during fighting.

During this time, the affected char will not exist, meaning he cannot

be attacked, nor can he attack in return.  All commands typed by a 

blinked character will be disregarded by the mud.

This spell has been designed only for group situations, and only to

that the affected is blinked, the mob will not attack that character.

The spell will wear off after 5 ticks or when a battle is over, whichever

comes first.



Please test this spell and give any comments on how to change/improve

the spell.  This spell is currently not available to morts.

ATTENTION ALL!

Please be advised of a bug in the skill 'sneak'.

This is at least part of the reason for the claimed pfile problems that have been reported lately.

The bug occurs when the 'sneak' skill activates Postage's new spell 'blink'.

Sneak actually activates ALL of the affect under AFF2, including serveral that are UNDEFINED.

But how could these affects make characters stop reponding?

Because the 'blink' spell is a two part affect.  BLINK on the list of AFF2 only means 

that the affect BLINKON is a possibility.  Please read Postage's explaination of this spell

in an earlier post to get a clearer understanding of how it works.

Anyway, if any characters stop responding, try using the immortal command 'unaffect' on the 

character.  This could fix it.  There seems to also be a bug with some equipment that produces

problems similar to this.  I'm pretty sure that the two are related...somehow.

Until the 'sneak' skill is fixed(or the 'blink' code is taken out), please do not use 

sneak for obvious reasons.

several pieces have been changed from WORN to ARMOR descriminating against

monks...it was agreed upon over a year ago that all qeq should be usable

by ANY AND ALL classes.

several morts have complained about the random unannounced changes and i 

don't care for it much either..i'm changing said eq back to worn and

changing the ac to affect...seeing as the places most eq that has been

changed has a multiplier of 1 it still serves the same purpose and has the

same effect...if the eq is changed further i will personally remove every

piece of qeq...flit has given me the go-ahead on putting all qeq into

one zone specifically for that purpose so no qeq is anyone's personal zone

but i have to wait for the rent files to be changed for the new vnums

once the eq is in a new zone...if i have to remove it..then there will

no sense in waiting...seeing as i have a copy of the files with eq and

vnums and (i think) rent files (will get a new copy if i have to remove

the eq) i can do this change with no problem...

so I decided to go through and check the quest eq one day.  After seeing

stuff like a level 50 hat that gave 50 ac and 5 hit and dam, I decided to

go through and change stuff.  Yes, I changed stuff over to armor instead of

worn because the ac vnum was not giving ANY ac since the worn flag does not

set that.  Yes, this is descrimination against monks, but then again, that's

the point of having a no armor restriction in the first place?  Also, for

helmets in paricular, it was descrimination against warriors since they didn't

get the ac bonus for headbutt.  I don't remember this discussion about lettingg

quest eq be worn by all and I don't appreciate the threats aimed towards me

just because you were feeling all full of indignation for monks.

winning a quest.  There is no logical reason for making special, out-of-the-

ordinary eq available to only 8 out of 9 classes.  Yes, monks are too

powerful in my opinion and need to be taken down a notch or two, but that's 

another argument altogether, but it's just unfair to say that they can't

wear quest eq.  If that's going to be the case, then why not just prohibit

monks from participating in quests?  That would certainly be easier.



On another note, all you have to do to to give WORN items an ac apply is

add the ac affect instead of using v0.

Good to see someone finally said something...my main concern is the

insane amounts of damage you can inflict per round.  Your average character

has a damroll close to his level, and in some cases exceeding it.  Now

when you apply that over the eight attacks a round he probably has,

actually having a weapon is just icing on the cake.  A damroll of 50 means

400 points of free damage every round.  In my opinion the damroll bonus

ought to be capped in *some* way, so 50%+ of your damage comes just from

the bonus alone.



Actually, in a way, you're right about the hitroll bonus.  With every

extra attack per round a player gets, it should be *harder* to hit the

target.  Something else to chew on, I suppose.

It seems to me that there is a huge experience gap that starts around level

8 and ends at level 20 or so.  I think this is an old throwback to when the

mud went from 30 levels to 100.  In that level bracket, it seems like what

you can kill doesn't give a fair amount of experience, or the amount you 

need per level in that range is too high.  We might want to consider changing

that.

The restring command is an awesome alternative to giving out quest eq for every

quest and we thank Postage for imp-ing this.  However, I'd like to suggest that

no clan eq be restrung.  The reasons for this is obvious.  I've already seen

morts using their restrung claneq with another three pieces of claneq and

acting like this was still following the claneq rules.  So use restring for

small quests instead of handing out quest eq for every little

'you-find-it-you-keep-it' quest, but don't rename clan eq.

You can now use "mset remort <#>" to set the number of remorts a mob has.

Similar to the level variable, the remort variable will affect the amount

of experience one gets from killing a mob.  Each remort is worth 100

levels, a 5x remort is equivalent to a level 500 char.  

By default, all mobs are 0 remort.  Use the mset command to adjust this

to your desired remort level.  Remember that if you adjust the number too

high, a low-level player killing it will receive more exp because of the

difficulty bonus.

just give extra attacks, but we all know how much spam a monk causes.

I think we need a new flag for mobs.  No matter how strong a mob is, if a monk

gets a lucky strike, it dies in one hit.  For this reason, I think the mob

editor should have the option of turning on a !NSTRIKE flag.  We already have

things to ruin other classes attacks.  Mobs with reversal really spoil your

mage's spells.  Mobs with AWARE really spoil your thief's backstab.  Mobs with

!BASH spoil a number of abilities.  It's about time mobs had some kind of

protection against the most powerful skill in the game.  It would have to be

used sparingly, just like the !BASH flag is.  For instance, if a monk is

fighting a victim without nerves, or even something that has really tough skin,

you shouldn't be able to hit a nerve in it for an instant kill.  Also, it

should be used for extremely tough mobs that you don't want to be defeated that

easily.

There are lots of higher level zones here.  A "newbie"

who is level 30 or less doesn't stand a chance in most

of the zones on here it seems.  The coolest, most

imaginative zones are all higher-level zones, and I think

that's a problem.  When a new person comes to NoMud, or

someone who is already here creates a new character, 

they have few places in which to explore and gain XP.

I say we builders should help these guys out by creating

some new lower-level zones.  My zone I'm working on will

be mainly for players who are level 30 or less.

Here's a few simple eq rules which we decided on a while back that I think we

still NEED to follow.  First the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM damroll that any piece of eq

can give is 5.  Second, the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM hitroll that any piece of eq can

give is 5.  Third, permanent effects are to be used VERY infrequently.  There

can be only ONE PIECE OF EQ with a permanent effect per 50 rooms of built zone,

rounding down.  These rules have been around for more than two years as far as

I know, and many people have built zones following them.  Please continue to

follow them and for those of us approving zones, please check to ensure they

are followed.

follow the current building rules, then people would have an easier time making

their eq to follow the rules.  Who's gonna wear high level neck eq that only

has damroll of 5 when the chains have 7?  And that's what builders want - they

want the zone that they've spent to much time building to be well liked and

their eq to be useful to players.  Who can blame them?

I'm pretty sure hanil stepped down from the HoB position a few months ago

due to his workload. The HoB should have ample time available to check eq/

mobs/zones EVERY DAY. Not just once a week.

Further if there are complaints about a zone being connected without

writing it on the builders board, please DO MENTION the zone number.

And the building board is for building issues, not connection issues.

If zones are opened, they should be stated on the mort board and maybe

on the immort board.

As far as I am concerned, the whole building committee is gone (due to  

summerbreak or commitments elsewhere), so the positions are sort of

vacant at the moment. Therefore ANY 105 who has a spare moment should

help out builders who want their zone approved.

I have the same problem as hanil, too busy at work to do some proper work

here. Fortunately I am in the position to be online while I'm working,

and therefore a bit able to help out with problems.

Last issue: I'm in the process of writing a small C program, which will

strip all eq/mobs of stats that exceed maximum values (still to be defined).

We need a definitive document on the rules of building.

ie a builders handbook, or bhandbook (for the command).

It needs to have all of the limits and rules of

building.

It needs to describe the process itself,

from using the olc to suggestions on descriptions,

to getting a zone approved to connecting it.



I am willing to compile the final document if

I can get some contributors.



ie I don't even remember all of the most recent

specifics, is it 1 perm aff for every 50 rooms,

or 1 hard core perm aff (like sanc) period?



therefore, it seems to me that we need to hash

these things out, come to a consensus, and make the helpfile.



PLEASE post suggestions on here...we'll hash em out, and I'll

suggest a final version, upon the OK I will

put it into the final document.

Then we convince Postage to write the command, or we

make it a helpfile, and it's in there...

   I'd save your fingers for typing more useful information, the things you

have mention have been talked about, kicked around, mulled over and general

said a million time to no avail.  As far as i'm concerned this mud wont ever

change.  It has now been stuck so long in the duldrums that its almost

completely lost at sea.  And the thing that gets me is that most of these

changes are so simple to implement it would take less than an hour to do it,

the fact that no-body has done it is a mystery to me, other than the fact of

course (as far as i know) the only people that have site access are krim and

postage.  Before anyone goes and starts tackling all the muds problems, it

first need to get it's shit together as far as imms are concerned, Nobody knows

what the other is doing.  Try like adding a Todo board and actually using it.

Code in my zpurge that i've ben asking about for months so that entire zones

can be changed more easily.  And write the zone building rules in a permanent

help file.  To much stuff is outta hand get it under wraps.  And read my post

on mortal boar, especially Darkchild.

flee, it tracks and hunts the player down. Not at a 

great speed, but not slowly either.

I beleive there is already "track" code in there, it's

implement.

Surrounds the mage in a shield of fire. When anything hits

the mage it will take damage from the fireshield. This spell

would also protect the mage somewhat from spells of cold 

cast at it, chill touch for instance off the top of my head.

Not totally protect, just lessen damage from cold spells.

Works much like bash or trip, will take the mob down

and out of commission for two rounds. If the player

gets a high succeed at this, it can send/knock the

mob flying out of the room to the next. If the player

fails, they will crash and burn and get taken down

themselves for 2 rounds. Also if they stuff it up

slightly they take the mob down as well as themselves.



0-20% Fail, fall for 2 rounds

20-45% Nearly, Mob and Player both down for 2

45-80% Suceed, Mob down for 2 rounds

80-100% Mob flies out of room and lands in nexts, stunned

in a heap for 2 rounds.

because it doesn't seem to fall into the rest of the pref stuff.  If !hassle is

removed on remort, should there be a nohassle spell?  Or better yet, would

anyone object if I made o ne for the bard class?  I was thinking along the

lines of a group nohassle and it's duration would not be stackable.

I think i can answer your question Klepto.  You see, the nohassle ability is a

PRF for imms.  Just like any imm can type nohassle and toggle it on or off,

just like they can toggle nogos, nograt, or noauct.  But nohassle wasn't meant

to be a mortal ability when it was coded in the original circle.  However,

we've now added it in as a bonus that can be gained from a class, which makes

it look like an actual perm AFF.  Nohassle is a PRF, but it's a preference that

morts can't toggle for themselves.  I hope this clear it up for you, but if you

have any questions, ask me and i'll try to answer them the best i can.

I heard that now there is a check that makes sure that characters remorting

don't end up with the nohassle preference toggled on.  Well, i have a

suggestion that seems to make sense to me.  Over the past month, i've seen

several mortals with the holylight and nohit preferences toggled to on.  How

about adding a check to the remort command similar to the one for nohassle that

makes sure that these preferences are off after ever remort.

I though of Rae'von also. I was thinking before to post him as the Iotw, the week before Pygar was 

but i was late.

 I almost did it anyway, but then i heard he came out with another part of Camolot this week 

so i though that at the end of the month, since obviously Rae'von has worked awhole lot on

his zones lately(in the last couple of months)that i would make Rae'von the 

Immortal of the Month.

But since the month was not over yet i didnt want to jump the gun but seeing how much eveeryone

On 06/28/99 Postage summoned all the players on the mud at the time into the icebox for a little chat 

I was fortunate enough to be there.  As for what was said i agree.  We multi-time remorts are VERY powerful.

And a change would be good.  I play this mud for a few reasons.  1 i like most of the people here.

2 I know this mud Very well and i have seen it grow alot in the past three years that i have been

playing on the mud.  3 and most importantly i like to help people IRL and here i can help you if you ask and 

you don't piss me off.  (some people have done this). So If you have something possitve to save about the mud or 

the changes that are coming i will support you.

I am here to fight for my mud... the NoMUD I love...  the nomud that

pygar and postage seem to wish to take away from me.  This upsets me...

I believe that I'm talking for myself and all my friends that I've brought to this mud.

This MUD is a Tyranny, in the words of Pygar.  Serious changes being made

without even an Imm vote? does this seem fair to u??  Morts, do u think u

deserve a say in what happens to your mud?  I think that I do...

We are the people who use this MUD...  the ones who keep it alive...

without us, there would be no MUD, just a bunch of Imms sitting around

talking to each other about the day when there were mort chars that

played.  Yes, I appreciate that the Imms do a lot of things for the morts 

that they never even know about.  They keep the mud running well,

but without us there is no MUD.  In any democratic country, there

are the citizens and the government.  The government does many things

to keep the country alive that the citizens never know about, that's the

way of things, but the government is responsible to the people.

The people support the Government, and Vice Versa, that's the way

it should be.  But in a Tyranny, (or Oligarchy, specifiacally) the Tyrant

decides for all, with the poor pathetic peons being 'forced' to live with it.

I feel like a peon, a small insignifigant peon.  Any little peon that

doesn't want to live with the decisions of the Tyrant must leave, by

whatever means necessary, and when the peons have a voice

of their own, the tyrant becomes angry...  the rebels are squashed.

I am a rebel, quell the uprising.  If you change my MUD, u might

as well destroy me, once u start, finish the job!!

I wish that this MUD was a democracy, a MUD where the players

have a choice in what happens to their MUD.  where they have

a voice, a powerful voice.   I would like to see a Vote on these

changes.  A vote amonst the morts and Imm. Not a Tyrannical

decision.  If these changes take place, I would ask that my

char be deleted by the apropriate imm, pygar.  If it is

not, I will delete it myself, and I believe that most if not

all of my friends will follow suit.

firstly it's not a tyranny...admittedly not EVERY detail of the

changes are voted upon but many of the MAJOR changes have been

discussed and agreed upon by many if not all of the imms

as for govt. in a democracy, since when do all members of the public

get to vote on every change the govt. decides to enact or implement?

when remorting was first instituted i don't recall morts having much

input on what was entailed in remorting so i don't see the need in

asking your permission to make the changes nor do i see the benefit

in adding the numerous players into the debate with imms on what

should and shouldn't be done--it's hard enough to get just the imms

to agree on something--why not let us do what we're here for and make

changes to the mud which we think are benefitial in keeping people

challenged and coming back for more...also don't get bent out of shape

when something discussed among imms gets leaked out, usually turns out

the fully story and info doesn't get leaked...how about we ask the

morts for their ideas on what should be done at our discretion, not 

yours...as for "your" mud, i seem to remember dozens of people playing

here before you and your friends arrived...we appreciate you playing

here and wish for you to remain...why not give the changes a chance...

there was life and fun here long before remorts...if you feel you

can't stand the changes after testing them then leave if you see fit

we can't stop that from happening...i've known you and many of the 

people on your list for quite some time and call you friends and

would not be pleased with your departure

I was very angry about them at first because I didn't 

know what was entailed with them (and I still don't know now..).

So I am going to give the Immortals new changes a shot in the dark.

to stay with nomud...cause I really like the People here.

I agree that it is becoming to easy for high morts to kill really hard 

mobs, and I somewhat agree with change, but I would like to

It is all but impossible to run a project such as this

by majority rule.

second) I see nomud as 1 huge, ongoing project.

By project, I refer to a project such as some do in school.

I will attempt an analogy, though an imperfect one.

In college, I participated in the FSAE contest.

SAE being the Society of Automotive Engineers.

the F being the Formula car.

The concept of the contest was to assemble a team

that is to act as a sub-contractor.

The team is to design, build, and race a formula car style

race car.  We are to design it according to several

monetary and safety constraints that are not important here.

The car was to be targeted at the "weekend autocrosser"

ie a hobbyist that races for fun.

Therefore to design the car, we have to, among other things,

consider what makes for a fun autocrosser.

So we set up the specs for the car: it has to corner this hard,

accelerate this hard, etc.

We decide this based on what our experience as both racers, and

previous years of designing and building these cars tells us is appropriate.



Since this is a huge project, we break up into smaller teams:

team1) Frame and Suspension

team2) Powertrain

team3) Controls (ie steering, shifting, etc)



The major decisions for each group are made by that group.

They only check with the other guys to make sure it doesn't directly

interfere with their parts, and the overall concept of what people

agree the car should be or feel like.



So the controls guys don't really have much say over if we're

going to use a naturally aspirated Honda 600,

or a turbocharged 250, the powertrain guys make that choice

after consulting woth the frame guys about weight, center of gravity, etc..



Now, let me attempt to relate this to NoMUD.

The muds designers and builders and yes, some of its players

 (yeah, we drive our own car) decided they wanted to change

some things to make the mud more fun (read challenging)and easier to build

 (literaly, making building easier, talkin bout mobs here folks)

So some of the muds designers (read coders, builders and admins)

got together and some people came up with ideas.

They passed the general idea by the other imms and most thought

the concept sounded good, and agreed it should be made so.

Then the group (in this case, mostly (or all) Postage)

decided on the specifics with the help of some of his fellow imms.

Now that group (ie Postage the coder) is building the changes into

the project.



We had to make the decision on what to change basicaly on our own,

for it was difficult enough just to get the imms to come

to some kind of concensus.  There is no way to run all the ideas

by all of the players and have them pick a "best" one,

even then, the specifics would have to be decided by the coder(s)

based on what was possible anyway, not to mention how long

the discussion would have dragged on.



Sorry, this post is huge and only makes pseudo-sense :)

But I hope I conveyed some of what running a mud is like.

A democracy is simply too cumbersome for something that

is done in our free time.  Yes player input is

incredibly important, it simply isn't practical for

everything.

in yours Fury, modern car builders account for pleasing millions

unfortunately you can't please hundreds.

I understand mudding, and love it. I understand that you will take

away the parts to this mud that make it superior.

With or without players input. But this is not a car. 

You can buy a new one, without missing the old one. 

This one as it is will be missed, because it will be degraded.

This is not an argument, you need not reply, just a lament.

Thy will be done oh powerful ones. Next time fix your leak.

If you don't want the players to discuss the change in negative light,

silence yourselves and just do it. and don't complain of our ignorance

of the changes, enumerate them. coding is complicated their effects on

the program are not. I actually pay money to play. Take away the remort

system and there is no progression. no continuance. no point.

That is the problem with other muds, you get to level 50 and every level

takes 2 billion points (or more) (there is not remort system)

nothing is gained. Other muds it is impossible to talk to the Immoratals/

Sages/Gods, they change the world and no one has the ability to discuss it.

Fix your leak. For you start to seem more caloused and cold then they when

wewe can talk to you and you are immovable, residing in your own ice box.

I think I'm probably the oldest player here. I'm now an Imm

of course, but I was a player for a long time before that.

And continued to play mort chars for a long time. 

UNTIL it became so easy that it was just basically boring.

If you care to go to any other well established ranked

mud you will find that in comparison, NoMud is so easy

that I can't even find an analogy for it.

It used to be FUN to "play" here. I still beleive it is fun

here, but more so because of the people. Rather than

the coding/area "play". You can go through zones here and

eat dinner at the same time, type "kill blah" and sit back

and wait for things to die. That is simply not challenging.



The changes that are planned, are an attempt to return this

mud back to a challenging game to play. Our player base has

dwindled to SO FEW. And mostly that is recently since the

perm affects on remorts made things too easy. For those that

have been around for a long time, I'm not sure if you will

remember, but I do. The times when someone would yell out,

Who wants to come help me kill Sauron, and a big group

of players would form, just to be able to kill the thing.

God, that was just so much fun. It wasnt easy. There is 

something seriously wrong when a SINGLE player can go through

and wipe out an entire zone within a half hour span. THAT

is what we are trying to CORRECT. Getting together with

a group of people to go do zones is fun. This whole concept

of returning the mud to a more challenging play environment

is something that the Imm community has been discussing for

MANY many months. So I would suggest that before you go making

outrageous claims about people arbitrarily making decisions

you get your facts straight. This concept has been talked

about and been in the works for well.. at least 6 months I

would think.

First off, I'm not agreeing that changes need to be made.  Personally, I don't

come here for a challenge, I come here to talk and kill stuff when I want to

and when I do that, I like to kill fast ;) However, others may feel

differently.  I haven't heard a lot of them, but that doesn't mean they don't

exist.  Anyway, the one thing that bugs me is that is not any fun at all to

begin a new character.  Personally, I'd like to see better newbie eq and pos

sibly having them equipped on joining of a guild.  I have been talking to

Postage and I will be helping code on the mud.  I have my own ideas about what

changes *I* would like, but to my knowledge, there hasn't been a lot of input

from players as to what they would like to see.  If you would rather talk to me

than writing on the suggestion board, you can do one of 3 things.  Mail me

here, which probably isn't good because of the mail limitations.  You can ICQ

me at 1688064 which I'm on most of the time.  Or you can real email me at

jlm@he.  Net.  It really doesn't matter to me, whatever is easiest for you.  

If you do mail me here, you might want to double check with me if I don't

respond back fairly quickly because I probably didn't get it.  One of the big

things that needs to be done, IMHO, is to scrap ALL current QUEST eq.  Quest EQ

is somewhat of a joke now.  If a player doesn't win a quest, they should NOT

have quest eq.  If/When I begin programming, I'm going to recommend a

NO-TRANSER flag.  QUEST EQ should be special and it should only be for the

players who earned it.  There are players running around with more quest eq on

them than there have probably been quests.  I recommend deleting all the quest

eq, creating new ones with better standards and starting afresh with a

I'd be more than happy to make this change.  I'm just as guilty of using other

ppls quest eq, but it just makes sense to me.  Ok, that's all I'm going to say

for now.  If you want the mud to be better, contact me with your ideas.  I'm

willing to step forward to seize some control, although I don't have a whole

lot of power at this point :) I think the mud needs a dictator ;) haha, or

someone who will at least keep things running.  So these are my thoughts, feel

free to respond to anything that I've written and feel free to throw ideas my

   Ok i did this months ago on the admin board but nobody paid it any heed so

i'll do it here.  I formally step down has HoB ( like ya didnt know from my

sheer absense alone) and i would like either Fury or Darkchild to take my

place.  Both have good heads on their shoulders and know what the hell they are

doing.  I'll still be around but i have my own mud to code and build, plus i've

just become utterly pissed at the politics and lack of action in the

re-balancing of the mud.  FYI, all these changes have been kicked around for

the better part of 2 years, nothing has changed and i fear nothing will change.

Until a few of these ppl learn to be adults and quit bickering over who is

right and wrong and just do something, this mud will continue to stagnate.  As

BR said in one of her posts.  I remember a time when NoMud was fun, this was my

second mud and the first mud i immed on.  I too remember a time when it was

hard, challenging, when you had to use your head and not go galabanting around

becuasse nothing could kill you.  Hell i remeber one of my closest mud friends

(here known as blister and several other names) got to the point where he had a

bunch of triggers set up to play for him...  And this was at least a year and

half ago.  If any of you have any comments or question email me or visit me on

  Good idea. Remember when I had to fight the Eternity Dragon with a big group? I was

a cleric and we lost a rogue and warrior in the process, but, it was fun because 

your class and level was needed MORE than you think. There was a time when needing

strength just to pick up a weapon meant a lot. God knows how many times I'd had to

wait for a mage just to strengthen me so I could wield Jup's T-Bolt, let alone get it

from my corpse. Those days are gone, but, are not forgotten. My only things is please

don't take ideas from other muds. Instead, learn about'em and come up with some new

ideas. That's why I love going to some old stomping grounds of mine (Duris and Dutch

Mountains). They require groups to kill a mob no matter how powerful you are. And,

remember, just because you're a walkin' badass to some newbie don't mean crap to a mob

who can regen hp faster than you can whack'em. You wanna do somethin' right? Help. If

not, shut up and take it like a man. And that's the bottom line because Crunk said so!

of old zones with replacements might be good too; eg all the zones where nobody much

goes anymore, replaced with just something different.

okay I don't want all Imms to continue resenting me for my opinion so I

figured you might need some help figuring out how to make your non-player 

characters tougher without making them like that clown in the mall

who just kills everyone in two hits. You need something to code so in

stead of recoding good parts of the game ponder these i think attainable

suggestions.

I know you want to keep this mud original blah blah but I've seen these work

1)when you flee fights the mob should follow you at a reasonable pace

  there's nothing more scary than having the mob that just kicked your butt

  deliberately following you. as long as you're in their zone, they should

  seek to destroy you.

2)mobs attack if you rest/sleep in their presence some may think there are

  mobs who do but I haven't found any. (and I sleep wherever)

3)mobs who attack you when you come in because of your alignment. (shop keeper

  ers won't sell to you already but mobs could attack 'cause of this too.

4)more mobs who cast spells on themselves and that heal themselves.

5)mobs that go berserk at a point attacking with more ferocity.

6)mobs that cast spells at us!! dispelling our magic, it's scarier when a 

  mob is bustin' out with offensive spells on you! (even if they're more

  potent spells than we cast)  spells like earthquake that hit everybody!.

7)if you need to re-vamp hitting abilities on zones or exp. up or down

    to balance distribution and visitors, do it!



that's all I can think of at the moment.

the other thing I was thinking was why are we expanding newbie zones?

there are already New Sparta, New Thalos, Dwarven Village, Elven Village,

the Dump, Trials of Minos, Castle east of Temple and Chessboard that they

can can handle. The thing is they don't know where half these places are.

on other muds I've seen a newbie manual which each newbie is born with in

their Inv. with dir. map, of some kind to help them out. start coding.



Which made me think hey! I don't know where the entrances to all the zones

are either, I'd love to go there but I don't wanna hit dt's.

Truth is most dts are IN the zones so giving dir in a manual or library

or maybe on a sign in the temple. along with say, proposed level, would

be a good idea.

I have to aggree and disaggree on this, one, muds are supposed to

This mud has so many dman policies that its choking itself

and doesnt even know it.  You cant curse you cant hold an opinion

without the threat of beig silenced.  You cant pkill on the grounds

that you would hurt someone feelings. most of the immstaff(save a

precious few) has their heads so far up their asses and such egos

that its impossible to get new ideas through.  Yeah there are good

things about the mud, you can clean out entire zones by yourself

you can boast that your the best thing since sliced bread but cant

proove it.  There are a TON of areas (this one is serious) and do

mean a friggin ton of em...well over 160 i think but the problem is

nobody remembers where they are and the eq is under-rated.  Theres

a ton of work to be done but nobody wants to do it, everyone points

fingers and says " You do it" I've given up here, some of us have

spent years trying to change it but its too few.  What needs to be

done is to get a set leader, a sole person who can say what is gonna

happen (you know like on othger muds....the implementors) this

committee and team bullshit just doesnt work, democracy is a slow

ploding process one which isnt suited for a mud.  A mud needs

swift definate decisions.

O.K. everyone here is a little story for those of you who haven't been here for as long as some of the rest of us.  I also recall a time when a bunch of people would 

get togeather to take out a mob or zone or whatever, I however wasn't real happy to do it because of the server lag I had at the time.  I also remember a time when my 

friends and I came here as a group to wreck shop.  That all changed when UA became a target for the imms to vent their frustrations.  First Rick aka Galad was banned as 

an Immortal, only the second person to ever have this done, then when the members of his clan the (CTC) got togeather to protest the entire UA Campus was site banned.

I remember myself, Mousse, Vader, Raiden, and Deracan all being ungodly powerful as a  group just because if you saw one of us you saw 3 of us anytime of day any day of the week.

I remember not being allowed back here after Rowan unbanned the UA just because my name started with "R" and she thought I might be Rick. I'm not a big fan of nostalga 

tripps and I do not think this mud needs to revert to trying to be a "real" mud or a challenging one.  I do not come here for a challange I come here to blow off steam.

Life is a Challenge.  Mudding shouldn't be one.  If I wanted a challenge I would go to a real mud not a social mud like this one is now and has always been.  I have made 

bids to become an immortal only to be denied for reasons only the imms themself know. I am not gonna leave NoMud for any reason at this point no matter how badly it gets screwed around because maybe eventually I'll become an Imm and will be able to fix i


back to the way it was.  I really don't care what all they do because eventually all imms leave at some point or another all the bad apples fall from the tree, maybe then

guys like Hanil will feal free to return and lead this mud forward instead of trying to take it backwards.

everytime I state my opinion, most of the people around end up thinking

i'm an asswad.  I've decided to do it anyways.  Try not to look down on me for

trying to contribute.

I agree in a monumental way with klepto, hanil, rosie, and all the others who

believe that there needs to be at least some semblance of a challange in order

for the masses to enjoy themselves.  I started playing near the end of the age

where Sting was a kickass weapon, ancient trees were the popular mob, and in 

order to kill mobs like sauron, the dragons, or Sharp-Tooth you needed to be

in a group/

I miss the days where mudding was a battle against mobs instead of policies,

dicators, and fellow mudders.

One point i want to make is that democracy is a bunch of crap.

We've proved full well that it doesn't work.

I think that we should have one general vote as to who should control the

workings of the mud.  That way the players can choose someone they trust to

take care of them.  We need a checks and balances system.  A small group

of trusted individuals who can look at ideas and throw out the ones that suck.



the second topic i wish to rant about would be classes.  The big powerful 

classes are monks and clerics, or at least they were last time I checked.

I think that the morts could definatley benifit if all the classes had equal 

power.  Before my first remort, I was a warrior.  I loved it.  It was great.

Now, however, a warrior is an obselete figure in our mud, as are bards, 

rangers, and anti-paladins.  The power needs to be equal.  I would also love

to see a few new classes come into play.

Even if we split existing classes into subclasses, such as Thief becoming:

Burglar, Spy, Assasin

or Ranger becoming: Druid, Forester, Hunter

It doesnt take a crapload of imagination to come up with this stuff.

My third, and final idea is to make the spells worth something.

I remember when a spellcaster was a valued member of any party.  Now all he is

is a dragalong who can dose people with armor and stoneskin.

Attacking spells are worthless.  

I just wish someone in the uptop would pay attention and at least consider the

possibilities of what just a tiny bit of work could do.

I must say, I've got a lot of respect for Pygar, Rae'Ven, and all of the rest

of you immortals who show up and try to help out.

I spent almost 10 years at UA, and there was talk about the Con being

held in Tuscaloosa, but it never happened. Figures it will take place

soon after my departure. PhD work takes ALOT of time and I doubt that

I will be able to attend. In addition, my MUD time is expected to 

drastically decrease once school starts this Fall. I will try to logon

when I can...prolly late at night and between classes.

My suggestion is to make it so any imm can help a mort

help the one who wishes to remort change his'her race and class if he'she wis

wishes to do so.

mob scripts that he had been working on, but of course he

One bonus with autoassist is that if a player has it on, he will get

It would be a big help if the code that divided the set exp by four after a

battle could be removed.  All the mobs are now set to the new exp charts and

for that to work, players have to actually get the set exp from the mobs they

defeat.  I don't know why this code was put in to begin with, but it sure is a

problem at the moment.  Here's an example.  Mob 3062 is set at 60 exp.  

However, when he's defeated, the player only receives 15 exp (As long as the

mob doesn't gain exp during the fight, but that's a totally different issue

altogether).

The Great Oak, a newbie area, is now open.  The mobs are level 1 to 8.  There

are only 61 rooms there but there are some helpful hints (the wise old owls)

that a new newbie might want to read.  It is located north of temple in the

middle of the grasslands, just south of the farm pond.  Also there are lower

mobs in surrounding grasslands (honey bee's, grasshoppers, mice) a newbie can

kill.

Is there any reason why mobs are allowed to gain exp like players?  I was

thinking that this code could be taken out.  At the moment, if a mob hits a

player that is a high remorter, then they will gain mega exp for every hit.  

This throws off the new exp charts, since after a few successful attacks to a

player, the mob has gained so much exp that he now gives 200k.  Actually, this

code wouldn't be a problem if the code that made number of remorts a factor in

per hit exp was removed.  So either one of these is a solution to this problem,

whichever is easier to do will be fine.
